Planning the Perfect Marriage Proposal

The perfect proposal is the one that’s meaningful to both of you. Whether that’s via the jumbotron during Sunday football or just the two of you in your backyard, everyone’s style and relationship is different. At Robbins Brothers, we're always here to brainstorm proposal details, so stop by anytime!

We’ve been helping craft romantic proposals for over a hundred years. Here are some tips:

  • What would the person you’re proposing to love the most? We can often get swept up in big ideas we see on social media, like elaborate flash mobs or sweeping romantic gestures in public. And sometimes, that’s exactly the right proposal! But if your person prefers quiet moments with just the two of you and gets overwhelmed by attention, then something private is the most sweeping romantic gesture you could do. The best proposal isn’t the biggest, it’s the one that shows you really know them.

  • Think about where you met, your first date, or a place that is significant to you both. Or, consider things your person loves. If it’s thrill seeking, maybe propose while skydiving! If it’s reading a book by a fire, maybe book a weekend at a cozy cabin in the woods.

  • While it may seem more romantic and exciting to spring the question completely out of the blue, real romance is being on the same page. Talk about your plans and dreams for the future and make sure the two of you are both ready to take that next step. Shop for rings for fun to see what they like (and what their size is!).

  • Be prepared with the perfect ring. Stop in to your nearby Robbins Brothers and talk to us about their style and the kinds of rings they like. We’ll help you find just the ring to make the proposal complete.

  • Think about what you want to say. You don’t need to write and rehearse a speech, but you may want to make note of particular things you don't want to forget.

Being Proposed To

What if you’re on the other side, waiting for a proposal? Our best advice is the same as our advice to the person proposing. Talk about your future together so you can know if you’re in the same place and are both ready. Be honest about how you feel and why you’re excited for forever together. Listen to how they feel and make planning your future a collaborative discussion.

And once you know that the two of you are in the same place, there’s no reason you can’t be the one to propose!
